Should you wake a sleeping baby?

This is a question I get asked often, so it felt like the perfect topic for a blog. While we’ve all heard the phrase “never wake a sleeping baby,” there are actually a few situations where it’s not only ok – but necessary.

Here are four key reasons to gently wake your little one:

1. Naps are too long

If naps are too long then your little one’s night time sleep will be disrupted. As your little one gets older, their awake windows will change. Four months looks very different to five, six, seven, eight, nine and 10. So while your little one would be aiming for a maximum of four hours daytime sleep at four months, they’ll be more like two to two and a half hours by the time they’re eight to 10 months. So, keep an eye on that daytime sleep, otherwise you might see an impact on your little one’s night time sleep.

2. Night waking or restless sleep

If your baby is waking for long periods at night or struggling to stay asleep, their daytime routine might be the culprit. Too much daytime sleep or an outdated nap schedule could be to blame. Tweaking wake windows or transitioning to fewer naps often helps.

3. Transitioning nap schedules

When reducing the number of naps (say, from 2 to 1), a short afternoon catnap can bridge the gap to bedtime. In these cases, it’s totally fine to let your little one nap on the go – but keep it brief. Limit the nap to around 20 minutes and wake them if needed to protect their night time sleep.

4. The mornings are tricky

Consistent mornings set the tone for the rest of the day. Try to wake your little one around the same time each day to support their internal clock. Letting them sleep in too late – especially on weekends – can make bedtime tougher and throw off their rhythm. Aim for a wake time no later than 7:30 – 8:00am to stay on track.
