Let’s be honest – getting out of the house is essential for your sanity, especially with a baby in tow! On-the-go naps are part of life, and that’s perfectly okay. Just remember: naps in a buggy or car might not be as restful as those at home. The outside world is busy and stimulating, so naps may be shorter or lighter.
That said, if your baby is generally a solid sleeper, they can easily catch up on rest at their next nap. Just keep in mind that once you stop moving, they may wake up – so aim for a longer walk if you want a longer nap.
When naps on the go are a great idea!
1. Managing awake windows during nap transitions
If your little one is dropping from four to three naps (or three to two), fitting in a short 15 – 20 minute nap while out can prevent overtiredness before bedtime. Motion helps with that tricky last nap!
2. Cot struggles
If your baby is unusually fighting sleep in their cot, don’t stress. Head outside for a buggy or sling nap to ease the pressure for everyone.
3. Overtired babies
Overtiredness – especially common in newborns – can make naps harder. A few naps on the move can help reset things and make the rest of the day (and night) smoother.
4. Long journeys
Plan travel around nap times. Your baby may sleep for a good portion of the trip, giving you a peaceful start and reducing stops.
5. You need a break
Don’t skip seeing friends or getting fresh air because of nap schedules. The occasional on-the-go nap won’t undo your progress with sleep routines – and it gives you a chance to recharge too.
